Q: How should I schedule my flights in and out of Juneau?
A: We schedule pick-ups at Auke Bay Harbor either in the morning or in the afternoon/evening. Morning pick-ups are usually for those who arrive the night before. Afternoon pick ups are usually for those who are flying in that day.
Departure flights should be scheduled for late morning or afternoon if you are staying with us the night before you fly out.
Remember, we can't get you in to town before about 8:30 AM (probably 9:00, at the earliest, by the time you get to the airport.)
If you require an early morning flight you will need to stay the last night in town at one of the hotels near the airport. This will allow you time to coordinate your checked fish boxes with the processor also.
Q: How do I find you once I arrive in Juneau?
A: Call us upon your arrival. We will confirm the pick up time and go over pick up directions. I keep the cell phone on the boat 723-2920. We ask that you take a cab from the airport to Auke Bay Harbor; it's a short trip. If you are staying at a local hotel take advantage of their free shuttle service.
Tell your driver to take you to the harbormaster's office at Auke Bay. Next to the Harbormaster's office is the gangway down to the floats. We will be waiting for you in the loading zone at the bottom of the gangway on the floats. The name of the boat is the DESIRE. It is written in big letters on the side of the boat near the stern. We always find each other.
Q; What if you are not there when I arrive at the harbor?
A: If you don't see us right away give us a call. If you arrived early the harbor is a great place to kill some time. Walk the floats and check out the boats. People are fishing from the floats, cleaning their catch; commercial boats are selling fish and crab, working on their gear. The harbor staff is friendly. There are rest rooms, phones and even a small library at the Harbormasters Office. The Hot Bite restaurant across the parking lot from the Harbor Office has great food and an outside or sheltered eating area. There is an espresso stand over by the Kayak rental area. There is a convenience store, Deharts, at the top of the parking lot that sells tobacco products, liquor, and deli items.
Q: What about my catch?
A: We clean and bag your fish for processing. We recommend you have your catch prepared by a local seafood processor. There are several excellent processors in Juneau including Jerry's Meats, Alaska Seafoods and Horst's Seafoods.
We normally use Jerry's because they do an exceptional job at getting our guests' catch "airline ready" on time, their rates are reasonable and our guests love the product.
Jerry's MeatsWe believe that having your catch professionally processed (vacuum sealed, flash frozen or smoked) at a state certified seafood processor, rather than "under a lean-to," assures you of the best, cleanest possible product to take home and share with your friends and family.
This allows us to hold our rates down while you pay only for what you take home.
Q: Can you provide a list of hotels in the Juneau airport area?
A:Juneau airport area hotels are:
Best Western........................907 789-5005
Travel lodge..........................907 789-9700
Super 8...................................907 789-4858
Frontier Suites....................907 790-6600
Aspen Suites........................907 790-6435
All of these hotels have free shuttles that will pick you up and deliver you to the airport, harbor and Jerry's Meats. All are located within a few blocks of the airport.
There are several restaurants located within walking distance from the hotels ranging in cuisine from Chinese, Mexican, Italian, and Truck Stop to McDonalds. If you have an early flight the airport has a restaurant and espresso bar on the premise.
Q: How should I dress?
A: Layering is the key to dressing. Fleece is always good. Expect anything from t-shirt weather to cold rain and wind (sometimes on the same day). Bring jeans or other warm pants, a sweater or sweatshirt and a warm jacket with a wind/water repellent outer shell. Bring sunglasses. Rain gear is a good idea. We have multiple sizes of rubber boots.
If you are from a hot climate or you get cold easily you should dress warm. Many of our guests from hot climates bring long johns and are glad they did. (People suffer from hypothermia around here not sunstroke.) Expect temps in the mid 50s to the high 70s. That can be a fifty-degree drop from what you are used to.
Q: What about bugs?
A: Don't worry too much about the bugs here. We are on the ocean and the bugs aren't too bad, no-see-ums mostly . We use "Skin So Soft" except when we get out in the woods and then only certain times of the year. I keep some Deet on the boat for the rare occasion we need it and we have some SSS and Deet at the Lodge too.
