Living the Dream

The Whale's Eye Lodge is a self-contained facility. The family project began with the purchase of a remote parcel on Shelter Island, near Juneau Alaska in 1986. Construction projects occupied weekends and vacations until we opened for business in 1995. The new guesthouse was constructed in 1998 and a living room addition to the main lodge was built in 2000.
Quitting our day jobs, liquidating our assets in town and moving to the wilderness to start a new business in an unfamiliar field caused most who knew us to suspect we had gone off the deep end. Most thought we wouldn't last a year. Now in our thirteenth season we can't imagine any other life. Fishing at Whales Eye has been featured in Fish Alaska Magazine three times, Alaska Airlines magazine, Salmon Trout and Steelhead, The Reel News, Alaska Magazine, and several others.

Off the Grid

We maintain our own power, communications, water and waste systems. We use a blend of old and new technologies ranging from Karen's wood cook stove to a high-speed satellite internet dish. We employ wind and solar power as well as a quiet and reliable diesel generator.

Throughout our business we try to make the best use of energy resources. Where we can, we use non-carbon energy. Where we must use carbon based fuels we have purchased the most efficient machinery we can find. We still go the extra mile to take you where you want to be, we just try not to burn the extra gallon doing it.

Meals

Your meals are served family style in the main house. They are lovingly prepared by Karen on her grandmother’s wood cook stove. Karen’s Low Tide Chowder recipe has been featured in Fish Alaska Magazine. She has more delicious salmon and halibut recipes than Paris Hilton has fancy shoes. Her menus ranges from crab enchiladas to chicken and dumplings or barbeque serf and turf. Each evening meal is topped with a decadent desert like home made cheese cake ooh-lah, fresh picked Shelter Island blueberry fluff, strawberry shortcake from the garden or just plain old peaches and cream. Eagle and whale antics provide the mealtime entertainment through the dining room windows.

Guesthouse

Guest Accommodations

We believe everyone needs their own space. So we built your guesthouse, at the water's edge, about 100 feet south of the main lodge, to give you a special space of your own while you are visiting. The guesthouse contains two cozy rooms, each complete with bathroom, shower, thermostatically controlled heat and 24hr. electric lights. Large windows allow you to keep track of the wildlife from the privacy of your own room.
So whether you prefer to linger in the Lodge or ponder in privacy there is a space for you.

Blog

Join us in the Southeast Alaska wilderness as we battle the elements and count the daylight hours through winter’s Great Dimness. Stay abreast of the seasonal challenges of life on a small Island, near a glacier, where the fish run by, on the cusp of the civilized world.
